Making the Business Case

Making the Business Case is a two-day workshop aimed at project managers, team leaders and business analysts that covers the entire process involved in justifying a project by means of a business case. It is intended to bridge the gap between the bare-bones technical justification of a project and the expectations of the business users and executives who will approve it.

The business case (also called a cost benefit analysis or feasibility study) is a key document, the very basis of many projects and investments. It should provide clear evidence that a project is worthwhile, that the benefits as described are achievable and that the associated costs can be contained.

The course is presented in a practical and interactive format, with face-to-face delivery in public courses at Sydney University’s Centre for Continuing Education Building, Newtown, near Sydney CBD.

Comprehensive course materials are provided, including reference book, printed slides, case study and sample solutions to case exercises. Bonus Word and Excel templates are provided on a USB given to each attendee. You will also earn 14 PDUs/contact hours towards your accreditation with the Project Management Institute.

No software and no prior experience required for this course, but those with some practical experience in business case development will be given useful, structured methods to make their project planning more practical and successful.

Effective Stakeholder Management for Project Teams

Stakeholder management has long been a challenge that has led to the failure of many projects.  A key project success factor is managing stakeholder expectations and effectively managing their engagement to deliver their needs and wants.

This practical 1-day course teaches you how to identify key stakeholders and define their roles, establish how committed are they to the project, align and prioritise stakeholder requirements to business and organisational objectives, and gain ‘buy-in’.  Attendees will also share experiences in communications issues such as organisational politics and conflict resolution, as well as ongoing management issues such as selling the project, maintaining commitment and status reporting.

This workshop draws upon industry sources such as the PMBOK® Guide, UN and US Aid standards, as well as good business principles to demonstrate how best to identify stakeholders, prioritise their needs and to develop a stakeholder engagement management plan to minimise project risk and to resolve issues that may adversely affect your project.

This workshop does not teach basic project management principles.  All participants are assumed to have a working knowledge of planning and management practices and hands-on project management or product development experience.
